The Austrian company **Voestalpine** has achieved a historic breakthrough by producing and installing the first railway track made with hydrogen, without carbon dioxide emissions

This development is part of a pilot project at the Donawitz plant. A mixture of scrap and pure iron reduced through the **HYFOR (Hydrogen-based Fine Ore Reduction)** process was used, which employs renewable hydrogen as a reducing agent.

From research to the track: green steel with railway quality

The rail was melted, rolled, and installed at the Linz central station as part of a strategic expansion.

The reduced iron was melted at the **TechMet** research facility. It was then transformed into a rail at the adjacent rolling mill, maintaining the required hardness and strength standards for railway applications.

The final product was installed at the Linz central station...more
