1. It's also possible to split H2O directly with sunlight. (solar splitting)

Imagine a transparent flow-cell, with purified water running through. At the bottom of the cell is Cu2O or CdSe. Their band-structure allows them to absorb sunlight in the visible spectrum. Electrons are set free, which are guided to a catalyst, which then splits H2O into H2 and O.
