1. As bad as it is, this was common during the Great Depression. I know it sounds odd for an animal

who could survive eating mice or other natural foods. But because dogs and cats were often more dependent on humans they would starve just as people starved. I have been told this by older folks who have long passed and lived through the worst parts of that time.
