I Thought Israeli Doctors Would Be Aghast at the Starvation in Gaza. I Was Wrong [View all]

In late July, something major changed. Two major Israeli human rights groups, B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel, released reports agreeing with the claim that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The reports are based on 20 months of documentation by rights groups in Israel and around the world of killing, attacks, destruction, dislocation, the torture of civilians and the starvation of hundreds of thousands of people.

Despite the innumerable disappointments over the two past years courtesy of my colleagues and the heads of Israel's health organizations, I truly believed that hundreds of reports on intentional starvation and two thick Israeli reports calling the war genocide would force our health leaders to take steps to stop the war and immediately send mass humanitarian aid into Gaza.
I was wrong, similar to every other moment when I thought that the worst was happening – bombing hospitals, intentionally killing medical staff, torturing medical staff at Israeli detention centers, paramedics being killed, 12 members of a family buried alive under the rubble of their home. This time, too, most Israeli academics, lawyers, media and medical people remained silent.
Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli declared late last month: "The government is speeding ahead toward erasing Gaza – thank God we're wiping out this evil." Opposition leader Yair Lapid said: "There are pockets of hunger in Gaza, and it's mostly the result of the fact that Hamas is stealing food. But the IDF is there. The IDF doesn't starve children, because the Jewish army doesn't starve children. … This violates our morals."
