I can buy your Phyllis Diller story: she and Joan Rivers were certainly as funny as any of the men they shared stages with, and getting everyone to laugh at their looks was the way they avoided threatening them as "equals."

Who was it who said that women fear men will kill them, and men fear that women will ridicule them?
