She quoted that same psychologist regarding the gaslighting. No one validated Betty's feelings. Her friends weren't real friends, and none tried to comfort her, only told her to move on. She kept accusing Dan of having an affair, he kept telling her she was crazy, that she should seek help, and so on.

Stumbo says at one point in the book that Dan and Betty deserved each other, and I couldn't help agree with her. But there was one part of the book that made me wonder.

It's already been reported that a man alleged he'd been hired by Dan to kill Betty. Who knows if that's true? But there was also a couple who allege they met Betty and Dan while on vacation. Dan allegedly told the husband he planned to drive his wife crazy so he could have her put away and keep all his money.

Also, Dan, a Republican, planned to run for office. Had presidential ambitions. Wife No. 2 would give him more children, and he'd look Kennedyesque, so he told friends.
