Stuart>> So, we got a lot like me who believe in some kind of HP. Some that don't, and they argue..some that are not sure <<
Odd, I've been here for about 2 years and I don't remember anyone *NOT* believing in some kind of HP, let alone arguing about whether some kind of HP exists or not. Myself, I'm a big "winner" in this category in that I believe (and know) that I have several HP's -- the IRS, the Dept. of Motor Vehicles, all levels of government that have great power over me, the boss, the list is endless. For recovery purposes, A Group of Drunks - and similarly for other fellowships -- serves as HP's -- I and other people together are by definition a power greater than just me alone. Similarly, a counselor and me is a power greater than me alone.
I never had a problem with Steps 1 and 2. Its the religiosity of the God God God God God God God of some of the remaining Steps, Tradition 2, and the Big Book (the explicit "G word" is found 136 times in the first 164 pages of the Big Book) and the portrayal of a specific kind of deity Creator God (in a program that claims to be "not religious" and extolling "rigorous honesty"
that are problematical to me and many others (and not just agnostics / atheists), including all 4 of the federal appeals courts and 2 state supreme courts that have ruled on this -- see http://www.democraticunderground.com/1144174#post32 for all that.
On another subject, this JPG file might amuse some -- its the Group Of Drunks group in Orlando Florida -- An AA meeting for those with an unconventional concept of a higher power. (I'm in Minneapolis and am not at all familiar with this group, but I love the poster.).
