Percentages don't tell a compelling story. Try this: nearly 44 million Americans over age 18 are diagnosed with a serious mental illness as of 2012. To put that in perspective, the population of England is 53 million. Of course, that's only diagnosed cases. The actual number of individuals with a serious mental illness is much greater.
