Romney and Bush both trace back to Anne Hutchinson, who was thrown out of the Masssachusetts Colony for her religious beliefs. Romney, Bush, and I are related through different children of hers.

As with many other colonial American settlers, Anne Hutchinson has numerous descendants, many of whom have reached great prominence. Three United States Presidents, Franklin D. Roosevelt, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, are among her descendants,[142] as are the three United States Presidential aspirants Stephen A. Douglas, George W. Romney, and Willard Mitt Romney.[143] Her grandson, Peleg Sanford, was a colonial governor of Rhode Island.
