A few days ago my friend Nancy called me, and said, "I have a huge favor to ask of you, Poindexter. On Friday I'll be volunteering at the homeless shelter (here in Santa Fe, and where we used to regularly volunteer before the Pandemic) and could you please drive me." I said, "Of course!" So when I brought her there today, I left her where she'd be working, and went to the kitchen, where I always used to work before, and asked the people there if I could help. They were glad to have me, and as most of them had not worked there before, I wound up being extremely useful and helpful because I knew where things were, knew how to set up to serve our guests. They were mostly connected to a local Episcopal church.
What I love about Santa Fe is that even though I'm not remotely religious, don't belong to a faith group, there is a wonderful inter-faith community. I'd originally gotten involved with the homeless shelter when my friend Nancy, who belonged to the First Presbyterian Church here, asked me, somewhat hesitantly, if I'd be willing to help out. Of course! That's the kind of thing churches do, and since I didn't myself belong to a church, I was incredibly happy to be asked.
This evening, the people I was working with strongly encouraged me to join them again, and told me their usual schedule. I think I need to do that.
Back to the meal. They'd made both a meat and a vegetarian pasta, more than plenty for the evening. Also roasted broccoli, salad, pineapple, and desert. The pasta was amazing. I brought home a couple of servings for myself.
Alas, I don't have the recipe.
