4. Try to figure out how to modify the trap so that it only closes when you pull a cord, for example.

Bait the trap with sardines and watch for a while (patience!). When they're both in the trap, pull the cord. Most spring-loaded traps can be propped open in such a way that pulling out a stick or part of the trigger will shut the trap.

In all truthfulness, I've only tried this once, and the string got caught on an obstacle so the cats escaped. So sad; I never caught Momcat and only caught two of the kittens later. AFAIK they are the only survivors of a litter of six.
