"Brutal" is a good word for it and yet it's the type of pain that tells me that I have really lived. Dr Seuss had a quote that goes something like, "Don't be sad because it's over. Be glad because it happened." That really works for me. The other thing that helps is the fact that I always had other pets around. My wife and I still have 4 cats.
