4. We've had to put two pets down, and we stayed with them, with our hands on them, as they passed.

It’s among the hardest things I’ve ever done, but I never considered not being there. My favorite pet died, unexpectedly, while staying at the vet overnight. That was more than 45 years ago, and it still bothers me that she died, in a cage, all alone.
