...did not have AC. In 1973 in Rochester NY, that was not a big deal.

When I joined the Air Force nurse corps in 1976 and got stationed in San Antonio TX, it was a huge deal. There was no covered parking on the medical campus, so the car baked in the sun all day and was an absolute inferno by 5PM. There I'd be, driving home in that sauna on wheels in a high-collared uniform blouse that buttoned to the neck, a wool blend skirt, and panty hose.

Talk about misery.
