J. Parnell Thomas

When the Hollywood blacklist began in 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was chaired by J. Parnell Thomas, a Republican congressman from New Jersey.

He presided over the hearings that produced the Hollywood Ten contempt citations.

Later chairs included John S. Wood and others, but Thomas was the one in charge at the time the blacklist was born. richard nixon was a founding member of HUAC.
