Cleveland proceeding with gun-offender registry [View all]

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The city of Cleveland is moving ahead with plans to require every person convicted of a new gun crime to register with the police department.

The move, announced Monday, comes despite an ongoing lawsuit by a gun-rights group that challenges the city's right to implement the registry and a larger package of gun regulations proposed in April.

"This is how we wrote it, and we're proceeding as planned," spokesman Dan Ball said.

Cleveland aims to create a registry for gun offenders similar to that kept of sex offenders. Mayor Frank Jackson called for its creation as a solution to the city's gun violence, which he and police Chief Calvin Williams said is exacerbated by the ease with which convicted felons are able to obtain guns.
