Tossing keys draws the BG away from the car owner. Skedaddle fast.

I go a step further. I have a Toyota key in my pocket that is for another long-gone Camry. That's what I throw.
It will fit in the lock but will not start the engine or unlock doors. That gives the owner [me] a few steps to find cover.

Hopefully that will save my car and keep me from starting a gunfight.
