Jesus was supposed to have been born in the spring, not right after winter begins. And the early Church, competing with the pagan festivals of the winter solstice, moved the holiday (holy day) of celebrating the birth of Jesus closer to the Solstice. And the Church also adopted the symbols of the pagans' celebration such as the evergreen tree, lights, festivals, holly, etc.
