Plus women did not have much of a choice. Even most factories did not hire women and if they did, they paid them half of what a man earned for the same job. Women could not get a credit card unless a man signed for her. It was legal to beat you wife because she was "your property". Thankfully I was raised in a household where my dad would never lay a hand on my mother. He knew better.
