Columbus has about 1/10th of the population of NYC meaning that the homicide rate in NYC is less than 1/3rd of that in Columbus. NYC has strict gun laws, Columbus does not!

New Haven, CT had a homicide rate about 60% of the Columbus rate with 10 in 2018 for a population of 139,000 (Columbus, 880,000)

As of one week ago, Chicago reported 561 homicides for 2018 (more than NYC and LA combined) which is high but down by over 100 from the same point in 2017

Birmingham, AL, with a population of 210,000 had 107 homicides in 2018, or a rate 7 times higher than New Haven, 4 times higher than Columbus, and 15 times higher than NYC.

The homicide rate in Birmingham, AL is basically the same as that in Chicago.
