And he said ( paraphrasing) that he wouldn't be happy until the poorest negro in St. Augustine was considered as equal as him. Something like that.
And he was a commissioned officer in the U.S. army who refused to sit in the back of a bus before Rosa Parks. Jackie said he was a Lieutenant in the army who put his life on the line and would sit anywhere he damn well pleased. He marched with Dr. King on occasion as well. A true civil rights pioneer.
