I think that the hitting streak is terribly overrated. And more modern streaks have been accentuated because of the mythos around 56.
During those 56 games, Ted Williams, who had 23 & 18 game hitting streaks, hit over .410.
So, despite going hitless for a handful of those 56 games, Williams still hit for a higher average, hit more homeruns & drove in more runs.
I truly believe that if that streak happened to a player in Detroit, or Cleveland, or St. Louis....it would have been an answer to a trivia question like the pitching record for most strikeouts in a season, or most consecutive hits.
But, DiMaggio played in NYC so it became pumped up nationally.
