The "autopilot" was there to automate routine tasks, where a typical unassisted human would make about one error for each mile driven. It was the driver's responsibility to watch out for conditions the tech couldn't handle.

The NTSB singled out Tesla as being slower than other car makers in deterring driver misuse of the driver-assist "autopilot."

Even autonomous vehicles have remote human supervision, at least in principle.
