in the 70s pumping gas and pushing car washes, a Jag XKE driver asked me to check his oil level.

Not a drop of oil showed up on the dipstick until the 9th quart of oil was poured in. It took 12 quarts of oil to reach the dipstick full level. Apparently it leaked and burnt oil he said.

With problems like that it's no wonder Jag is in trouble.
