I have to disagree with your premise here.

I believe that the people you describe attend church and call themselves Christian because they believe in their version of Christianity, whatever that is. It allows for a moral superiority and lets them feel better about themselves and their actions as opposed to the secular reasoning you indicate.

As to their belief in Santa, not sure about that one.
