4. We had a May Pole celebration when I was in first grade in 1958

Wednesday

There was a permanent tall metal pole at our school in Wayne NJ. A few days earlier, the school custodians got out long metal chains and attached them to the top of the pole. I can't remember whether there were ribbons attached to the chains or not. My class performed a Danish dance and our moms sewed the costumes.

We were taught how to make paper May baskets some years. We put wildflowers in them and gave them to neighbors.
