October 7 is a perfect recent example of that.

Netanyahu was on his way out, progress had been through the Abraham Accords, and Hamas did October 7, knowing full well that would keep Netanyahu in power, cause retaliation from Israel, and use that as a propaganda to motivate world opinion against Israel.

Hamas got a lot more than they bargained for with that stupidity.
