Here's an article that doesn't name Hallmark specifically. But does mention that manufacturers, esp. of kid clothes, pushed the pink/blue thing for a very good reason - if parents had a boy and a girl, they needed to buy 2 sets of new clothes etc. Where they formerly got away with only buying one set, and the younger kid got hand-me-downs regardless of its gender.

Interesting quote in here from a 1918 trade journal, suggesting pink for boys and blue for girls. Because pink is a "stronger" color, being related to red. And blue is "daintier."
