2. At the top of each forum thread listing there is a 'Start time' link to do just that.

Unfortunately, that link is not visible when viewing the mobile DU layout. But you can add '&sort=time' to the end of a forum's URL to view the threads sorted by start time.

For example...

https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1256&sort=time

... gives us this...

https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1256&sort=time

For the forums you frequent the most, I suggest creating the links for sorting by start time and then bookmarking them in your browser. Here they are for the Main forums:
