Estimates on self-defense gun uses (shot and not shot) per year run around 1.4 million give or take a few 100K depending on which side does the estimating.

The estimate of 1.4 million comes from a pro-gun study that has been refuted many times over. It gets repeated in the NRA echo chamber, but has lost all scientific credibility. The fact that you would even repeat this number is an indication that you care little about the facts and are willing to repeat any NRA talking point that suits your agenda.

In fact, the number of "on paper" defensive gun uses is around 100K per year, but even that overestimates the amount of "good" that comes from guns, because just the fact that a person claims to have used a gun in self-defense doesn't mean that (a) it was actually an act of self-defense (i.e. the Trayvon Martin incident would be counted in that total) and that (b) using the gun actually made the situation better.

There is, in fact, no credible evidence that owning or carrying a gun makes a person any safer. On the contrary, the studies done have found the opposite conclusion: that owning and/or carrying a gun results in a higher, not a lower risk of being murdered.
