I visited the USSR in the late '80s with my grandmother had joined a peace group which had a "sister town" there - and the people were very friendly towards Americans. However, they did not like then-President Reagan one little bit because he gave then-Soviet President Gorbachev such a tough time. Gorbachev had instituted more progressive polices which the Russian hard liners forced him to roll back thanks to Reagan.
