I was living in Japan at the time and met some young Russian entrepreneurs who would come to Japan, buy used cars, and then drive them back to Moscow to sell. It was a pretty good deal since used Japanese cars at the time tended to be Toyotas with low mileage. I met them at the home of a Japanese man who had studied Russian and had known them for some time.

What I remember most is how carefully the Japanese man prepared a basket of fresh fruit and placed it in a semi private spot in the room. They ate the fruit with such reverence. It was clear that it was a very special treat for them.
