7. I remember that Russians had a tough time owning cars, not too many were available

And where would they get them serviced/fixed? At least in the cities, public transportation was readily available.

But what I find most depressing now (other than Americans are certainly not welcome) is that at the time the Russians were so dedicated to peace. Since they had suffered so terribly during WWII, fought on their own land, there were statues and plaques everywhere, remembering those who were lost and dedicated to peace. They even had museums in the schools to teach the children about the war so they would never forget. We met with several peace groups while we were there and one older woman who had served as a nurse during the war sticks in my mind. She said, "when you go back, please tell your president that we want peace." *sigh*
