George Bush Sr. lost re-election in part because of looking at his watch during debates, but also things like not knowing that grocery stores had scanners by the 1990s.

A part of me believes media ownership representatives, living in insulated communities as far removed as possible from paycheck to paycheck shoppers, were shown some type of sketchy polling that indicated, as the mid-west ‘blue wall’ dissipated, Republicans (not the initial misled, angry working class victims, now including these media managers) had to react a certain way based on how Dems were losing steady support (not entirely wrong). But, they also suggested GOP political interests could only avoid a sudden, surprising *even faster erosion* of support that hadn’t yet affected them via the base unless they were willing to “placate the masses” with more Trump.

But they were wrong, there wasn’t much if any demand outside the *primary election* base with large GE moderate/conservatives/independents for more Trump. Actually, the opposite, suburban women were and still are turned off by his continual push to abuse power and target more than just their abortion related reproductive rights.
