This was several years ago. A Muslim kid in Texas with a talent for electronics built a digital clock. He took it to school to show to his friends and teachers. Someone worried it might actually be a bomb, so he was reported to the police, who promptly arrested him.

He was proud of his accomplishment and wanted to show it off. People who build bombs don't often do that. There was also nothing attached to the clock that could possibly explode. Nevertheless, the local Powers That Be decided that any Muslim kid walking around with home-made electronic devices was a terrorist, and they treated him as such.

Should the police have given the clock a close look, just in case? Maybe. But arresting the kid? Everyone thought that was going too far.

Except Maher, who said it looked like a bomb to him, and who thought the police did the right thing.

That was the moment he jumped the shark for me. And he's jumped many more sharks since then.
