(6,059 posts)It's only been held since 2000.
Unlike the World Cup, which is held every 4 years, which is the most widely viewed and followed sporting event in the world. The viewership of the 2018 World Cup was estimated to be 3.57 billion, close to half of the global population, while the engagement with the 2022 World Cup was estimated to be 5 billion, with about 1.5 billion people watching the final match.
All of this is to say, practically nobody cares about the Club World Cup outside of the 32 clubs competing and their fans. It's nowhere near as popular as the UEFA Champions League in Europe, even among American audiences. Attendance at the tournament averaged just 34,759 out of a capacity of 61,352. Only 3,412 fans turned out to watch Ulsan Hyundai and Mamelodi Sundowns. US TV audiences averaged just 400,000, a 0.17% rating.
I'm sure Trump thinks this is the greatest most prestigious trophy in the world. In reality, he just likes it because it's gold and gaudy.
