Unless you live within about 20 miles of a transmitter cluster, "rabbit ears" won't do you much good, even if amplified.
In most areas, the way to go is an outdoor yagi on a 20-foot (or higher) mast with a rotor, run through a signal amplifier of at least 15 dB. That's about $250-$300 in gear, and maybe that much again if you have to hire someone to install it. And even then, reception is subject to the terrain between you and the transmitter.
