I've always thought that he big shot fascists mistook his courage and discipline as a sign of mental weakness. They must have felt he was a patsy, easily manipulated.
But he pretended to be sucked in by their bullshit and went public with their treasonous plans to destroy America.
Some pols were riled by his testimony and, I'm sure, wanted to act on it. But most -- including FDR -- felt it more prudent to sweep it all under the feeling, I guess, that, after all, Butlers public testimony made the traitors (may they all continue burning in Hell) back off. Personally, I've often felt that public hangings of these rich oligarchic traitors would have had a beneficial effect on the patriotic pride of the American people.
