(29,832 posts)Every time I get the opportunity, I point out how important it is to make a distinction between mis- and dis-information.
It's easy to create misinformation. We do it all the time. Inadvertently. When we're mistaken about facts. Innocently. When we get bad, misleading information. Maliciously. When we lie.
But disinformation, the insidious deliberate sharing of misinformation when you know it to be false or bad information, is propaganda designed to decieve, mislead and confuse.
This creates the atmosphere that nothing and no one can be trusted.
It is destabilizing in many ways. Deliberately.
Worst of all, it creates separation between individuals and groups of people, isolates us and causes fractures in the very fabric of society.
