I decided to look into how long Luigi Mangione avoided capture, and how he managed it. Here's what perplexity had to say about it:
Luigi Mangione was at large for about five days after the December 4, 2024, shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City. He was arrested on December 9, 2024, in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
How did he avoid capture for that long?
Mangione meticulously planned his escape, arriving in New York City by bus to avoid airport scrutiny, using cash for hotels and travel, and employing fake IDs to cover his trail.
Immediately after the attack, Mangione fled the scene on an electric bike, which he abandoned in Central Park. He then used a taxi, various forms of public transit (including subway and trains), and interstate buses to leave New York for Philadelphia and then Pittsburgh, before making his way to Altoona.
Mangione wore masks, changed his appearance, and avoided digital footprints, making extensive use of anonymized methods for payments and transportation.
His escape ultimately failed when a McDonald's employee in Altoona recognized him from widely publicized suspect images and alerted authorities, leading to his capture.
Despite careful advance planning, Mangiones freedom ended due to public tip-offs and coordinated law enforcement efforts publicized through surveillance images.

I was like, damn, dude was organized, I either never knew or didn't remember his entrance and escape was so elaborately planned. I also thought, given the high profile (and recent) nature of that case, that whoever did the Kirk deed may very well have read up on how Mangione got away because his means were pretty effective, for such a high profile slaying, 5 days is pretty long.
Some of Luigi's steps, however, would not be available in smalltown Utah, such as the availability of a lot of public transit, and being able to blend into a cities of millions of people. So those are to the Kirk killers disadvantage, but what works to his advantage is there's a lot fewer cameras in smalltown Utah, vs. NYC, and they're likely of lower quality. In fact, Mangione was ID'd by name, and quality photos released to the public by the next day (relatively sooner than it is now) because of all the cameras. That may not happen for a bit in this kids case.
Luigi stayed on the lamb for 4 more days primarily I think because he got the F outta dodge, and went someplace somewhat remote, where people would be less likely to be looking for him, and he travelled by bus.
My thinking is, if he tried to follow the Mangione plan, he would head someplace he has no ties (as Mangione did), on a bus. He probably wouldn't risk taking a bus from Orem, just a couple miles from the campus, esp. as buses leave there a few times a day, not a few times an hour like SLC. Thus, consider he may've driven to SLC because its only 45 mins away, buses would leave from there a lot more often than from Orem, and there would be a lot more destinations possible from there, and he could be more anonymous in the big city.
So there you go, Kash, there's some tips, since you maybe don't know what the hell you're doing. Focus on SLC bus and train station(s). And remember, everybody has to eat, which is how Mangione got caught. Check the footage in the cheap eats places near the SLC stations
