I come not to praise Charlie Kirk, but to bury him. [View all]
Charlie Kirk was, in no uncertain terms, a monster. His hate for a whole litany of people and causes, and the fact that he used his p,atform to spread that hatred, warping the minds of an entire generation of young men means that his death invokes no feelings of sorrow or compassion in me. He was a pestilence on our society, and with his support of Trump and other right wing politicians, he is indirectly responsible, in part, for the thousands of deaths worldwide that the Trump administration has caused, and the millions more that will happen.
Kirk was nothing more than a hate merchant, a man whose sole purpose was to inspire hatred for those who weren't straight, white, Christian males. The fact that he has so quickly become a martyr for the right wing, that he is being virtually beatified by the right wing in this country just goes to show how far from humanity these people have slipped.
I find it deliciously ironic that a man who said after a school shooting that losing a few lives due to gun violence is the price to pay for an unfettered Second Amendment died by that same gun violence. It is appropriate. And while political violence is never the path for us to go down, I cannot help but feel that ultimately we will be a better place without Charlie Kirk in our lives. My only real concern regarding all of this is the backlash that we will all face because of this. Kirk is being made into a martyr, a bloody shirt to wave before the masses. His legacy of hatred is being whitewashed, and those who dare not to go along are getting canceled. This could all turn into something much darker, the calls for generalized retaliatory violence are loud and growing louder. This could be an inflection point where the rabid right wing goes from mere words to actual deeds.
So let us bury Charlie Kirk, and hopefully the hatred that he inspired. Feel no guilt for truly remembering the deeds and legacy of the man. Sadly, that legacy will be tougher to get rid of.
