(6,042 posts)I grew up during the civil rights era in Jackson, Miss. Then in Ft. Worth, Texas for a couple of teenage years. My parents were Democrats and definitely liberal. My father regularly warned me and my younger sister to keep quiet about our opinions regarding the civil rights movement. It was not because he was ashamed of it. It was about safety. He knew it was dangerous for anyone admitting to be on the positive side of civil rights. I was not allowed to put a Democratic bumper sticker on my three ring binder when I was in high school. Concern for the safety of his children is why my father insisted we keep our political preferences to ourselves. The fear lingers on to this day and I seldom reveal my political views unless I know you very well. That is one reason I love DU .because it feels safe here.
