2. The premise of the shutdown

was getting R’s to come and negotiate. And then after 40 days of the shutdown, the Dems gave in without getting anything out of it. And that’s the crux. If the Dems held out and got some concessions for the ACA, you could point to how the shutdown ultimately benefited Americans. But instead, people lost paychecks and SNAP and people still are going to lose their subsidies.Maybe it was always going to end up this way, but if that’s the case, the length of the shutdown seems to be a major miscalculation.
