In reply to the discussion: Dr. Oz under fire after declaring war on the sick: 'Won't tolerate it anymore' [View all]Blackjackdavey
(235 posts)His basic premise regarding children is not wrong. Understanding that many childhood illnesses are preventable or behavioral and that parenting or lack thereof does play a major role in childhood illness isn't wrong. He's also not wrong that diet and companies marketing garbage not food to children and parents is a major factor. However, as mentioned above already, the big money polluting industries and tech industries also are major contributors and we know they have no intention of reigning that in. But the major point I want to make, is the reason many children and families are stuck in a cycle of illness, generation from generation is socioeconomic, environmental and cultural. Families can't afford increasingly expensive healthy food, they don't have access to parks, they don't have basic nutritional information or accurate information of any kind, they don't have any idea how what positive parenting, behavior management and prosocial skills are and Oz along with the man behind the curtain do not want to acknowledge or address any of those things. (Who am I kidding they don't understand or know what those things are either.) Families often like to pathologize their children in order to mask overall family dysfunction, our government is doing the same thing.
Therefore, added together, he starts out right, ends up sadly wrong.
