5. There's usually nothing more to it than a profit motive

They want money, they find a vulnerability, they exploit it, then they start making demands. Its just blind greed. We deal with it for like 2000 clients a year at my job. Its usually no more nefarious than the mafia asking for protection money. Its still a crime, but its usually not state actors. They're much more sophisticated.
