Maryland House speaker says 'now is the time' to take up redistricting

The leader of Maryland’s House of Delegates is pushing her colleagues on redistricting, saying she is “eager” and “willing” to consider redrawing congressional lines to help match changes made in GOP-controlled states.

House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones’ comments come after Gov. Wes Moore said “now is the time” to start having conversations about redistricting in Maryland.

Moore told Politico he’s “ready,” “eager” and “willing” to partner with the General Assembly to ensure voters have fair maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. But Moore has yet to call on lawmakers to take action.

“I agree with Gov. Moore’s recent comments that now is the time to have conversations about redistricting in Maryland. We’ve been having those conversations in the House,” Jones, a Baltimore County Democrat, told The Banner. “He has a ready and an eager and a willing partner in me.”

GOP lawmakers want to ensure financial reports are submitted before school districts seek referendum

Wisconsin Republicans want to restrict school districts’ ability to seek referendums if they haven’t turned in financial reports to the Department of Public Instruction on time.

At a public hearing Thursday, the Assembly Education Committee Thursday heard testimony on a bill drafted in reaction to the historic referendum that voters approved for the Milwaukee Public Schools last year, and that was followed by the revelation that the district was months late in submitting financial documents to the state.

The school district’s tardiness has led to upheaval throughout the district, including the decision to replace the MPS superintendent and additional audits ordered by Gov. Tony Evers.

The education committee also took testimony on a bill that would allow education students to complete their student teacher requirements during the summer and a bill to change curriculum requirements for human development classes if districts offer them.

RI-GOV: Rhode Island AG Neronha will not run for governor

Cross one would-be candidate off the list: Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha confirmed Friday he will not be running for governor next year.

The term-limited Democrat has for months fueled speculation about a potential bid for the state’s top office. In an email sent to his campaign listserv Friday morning, Neronha, 61, said he will not run for any elected office after his term ends next year.

“Attorney general is the only elected office I have ever been truly interested in, and politics for me was a means to an end, not an end in and of itself,” Neronha said.

“After much discussion with my wife and sons, who stood with and spoke for me on that beautiful Jamestown morning eight years ago, we’ve decided that it will be time for me to move on at the end of 2026.”

MO-01: Cori Bush launches comeback House bid in Missouri

Former Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) announced Friday she’s launching a comeback bid to represent Missouri’s 1st Congressional District after she was ousted in her primary last year by Rep. Wesley Bell (D-Mo.).

“I ran for Congress because I know what it feels like to be a working-class St. Louisan. Too often unseen, unheard, left out,” Bush said in a more than two-minute ad. “I promised to fight for St. Louis, and we delivered.”

Bush, who served in the House between 2021 and 2025 and was a member of the progressive group known as the “squad,” was defeated during her primary last year as a group aligned with the pro-Israel American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and other opponents spent millions backing her opponent, Bell, the then-St. Louis County prosecutor.

The former nurse and community activist has been a staunch critic of Israel, which invited in a well-funded primary challenge against her.

What is Prop 50? Poll shows Californians support as special election nears

A survey of California voters from Emerson College Polling found 51% would vote yes on Prop 50 if the election “were held today.” That’s compared to 34% who’d vote no and 15% who are undecided.

The poll, conducted Sept. 15-16, also found that among those “very likely” to vote in the special election, 55% plan to vote yes on Prop 50 while 35% plan to vote no.

“Regardless of how voters plan to vote, 51% think Proposition 50 is a good idea and 49% think it is a bad idea,” Emerson College Polling said.

It follows a poll from the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley that found 46% of Californians thought redistricting in California that favored Democrats to counter Texas’ efforts was a good idea, while 36% said it was bad.

TN-07: Some Tennessee voters express concerns about political mailer sent

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — As the race for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District heats up, some Tennessee residents have expressed concerns after getting a political postcard in the mail.

“Your neighbors are watching and will know if you miss this critical special election,” the mailer reads, in part. The postcard, sent from an unverified source, also reads “The TN Republican party HQ will see whether you have voted” and “we are compiling an official list of Republicans who fail to vote.”

Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Scott Golden said the state GOP did not send the postcard, adding that it could violate federal electioneering laws.

“We’ve had a few calls to the office regarding the mailer … It wasn’t coming from the Tennessee Republican Party, even though it certainly referenced us … It was done with an Austin [Austin, TX] postmark,” Golden told News 2.
